Ramadan & Eid Festival 2013 – Celebrate it in Abu Dhabi

Ramadan, sometimes referred to as Ramazan, is the ninth and holiest month in the Islamic calendar. The month, which lasts between twenty nine and thirty days (as it follows the lunar cycle), will be spent in fasting and prayer. In 2013, the month will occur between July and August. It is obligatory for all Muslims to fast between sunrise and sunset, forsaking food and water during this period. It is generally not a popular time to visit Abu Dhabi as the flow of activity in the emirate is disrupted. Offices work shorter hours and many restaurants remain closed during the daytime.

On the other hand, this also means that crowded tourist spots are no longer crowded and that one need not wait in long lines anymore. Since most locals do not venture out during the day, shops stay open well into the night, and a number of them have promotional offers and discounts, making it a terrific time to go shopping. Eating in public during the fasting hours is prohibited and most restaurants only open about an hour or two before the sunset. However, tourists are free to eat within the confines of their hotels. The end of the month is marked by a giant celebration.

Although visiting during the month of Ramadan does pose a few challenges, it is a terrific time to visit the United Arab Emirates. Foreigners can learn a lot about the local culture and practices. It is an especially good time to do sample traditional Emirati meals. One should make a point to visit the iftar (name given to the sunset meal) tents that pop up throughout the emirate. They serve delicious local cuisine and one can even indulge in traditional games.

Hotel prices tend to drop during the Ramadan season, which is another reason why it is the perfect time to visit the place. Tourists looking for a hotel Abu Dhabi UAE that comes with all the latest modern amenities can try the Grand Millennium Al Wahda, which is situated right next to the popular Al Wahda Mall. In addition to a great location, the Abu Dhabi hotel also has a terrific rooftop pool and a delightful spa.

Arafat Day – the Pinnacle of the Islamic faith

Arafat day, or Day of Arafat, occurs on the 9th day of the pilgrimage to the holy site of Mecca, and it is believed to stand as the day on which the religion has been perfected. When you visit Abu Dhabi during this time, consider checking into a spa resort Abu Dhabi has to offer its international visitors, such as the Anantara Al Yamm. Providing a soothing experience in the middle of the desert, these villas in Abu Dhabi are fine oases for some welcome rejuvenation. Especially in the aftermath of Arafat Day, as it is a day of fasting and devotion as Muslims worldwide choose this time to ask Allah (the Arabic word for God) for forgiveness and ultimate salvation. The act of fasting is an important aspect of the Islamic faith, as it commences during the entire period of Ramadan and culminates in the evening, to be taken up again the next dawn for more than a month. A revered spiritual practice, it aims to bring the practitioner closer to Allah. Arafat Day marks the end of the period of fasting. During the Day of Arafat, supplicants who have undertaken the sacred pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca gather on the Plain of Arafat and Mount Arafat and devote their thoughts and prayers to Allah and their counterparts around the world do the same. Mount Arafat is the site from which the Prophet delivered his famous final speech before his passing, and he urged universality among Muslims and non-Muslims alike, as well as urging his followers to stay true to their faith and to treat women with kindness and compassion as worthy partners in the marriage contract.

In 1971, Sheikh Zayed became president of Abu Dhabi and held the post until his death in 2004. The ruling Sheikh was regarded to be an economic visionary, who completely transformed Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape during his tenure as the country’s ruler. But to celebrate Sheikh Zayed’s rule, Abu Dhabi explodes into a celebrational whirlwind that lasts for about a week. Many public and private institutions undertake preparations more than a month beforehand to showcase the Sheikh in all manner of vibrancy and colour. Multi-hued trails of fireworks light up Abu Dhabi’s skyline each night in joyful commemoration. Traditional concerts and dances featuring the best talent celebrate the historical figure and his reign. The locals take to the streets in traditional attire, and the vehicles bear the national flag.
