Ramadan In Maldives – Observe the Local Customs

The month of Ramadan is the ninth in the Islamic calendar and is considered holy by all Muslims. Devotees observe a month-long fast where they forego food and water from sunrise to sunset. The end of Ramadan is marked by a large celebration. Ramadan (which is called ‘Roadha Mas’ by the locals) in Maldives is a grand occasion. After all, the Maldives is a Muslim nation, and the festivities take place throughout the month and not just at the end.

Although meant to be a time of spirituality and introspection, there is also a streak of merriment. Inveterate shoppers especially enjoy the season as many shops run sales and offer discounts during the period, tempting locals and tourists alike to make a few purchases. Restaurants run Ramadan-themed menus and even hotels provide special packages during this special season.

However, visiting Maldives during the month of Ramadan does have one drawback. In general, shops, offices and restaurants operate shortened hours with some restaurants only open in the evening – just in time for breaking the fast. The resorts, however, function as usual and one can always grab a bite to eat there. In any case, these changes should hardly inconvenience tourists unless they are visiting Male. It would be better to delay trips to the capital until the evening – the streets which are quite deserted in the morning burst with activity after the sunset.

In 2013, the month of Ramadan will occur from mid-July to mid-August. It is a great time to visit the Maldives as one can learn a lot about the local customs and traditions. That being said, travellers visiting the island during this time should keep in mind that fasting is compulsory on the local Muslims and although foreigners are exempt, it would be considered impolite to eat in public. Tourists can enjoy the local culture at a Maldives resort like the Adaaran Club Rannalhi. This quality example of a Maldives hotel is situated in the South Male’ atoll, along a pristine beach. In addition to various facilities, the hotel provides a series of villas built right over the water. The villas are perfect for visitors who cannot get enough of Maldives’ clear blue waters.

Accession Day – Abu Dhabi’s celebration of Sheikh Zayed

The emirate of Abu Dhabi is a splendid cultural landmark in the Arabian landscape that spans the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Visitors looking to soak up the spectacular offerings of this desert oasis have a choice selection of Abu Dhabi beach hotels to indulge in. A fine Abu Dhabi resort that promises to truly pamper its guests in the spirit of desert hospitality is the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. This elegant property’s exclusive interiors and stylish amenities promise an Arabian fantasy experience to rival none other. Accession Day is a holiday of rampant celebration and joy in Abu Dhabi. It commemorates the dawn of a new epoch, when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan overthrew his brother in a bloodless palace coup on August 6, 1966, to assume the throne of the UAE in Abu Dhabi, the country’s main emirate. In 1971, Sheikh Zayed became president of Abu Dhabi and held the post until his death in 2004. The ruling Sheikh was regarded to be an economic visionary, who completely transformed Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape during his tenure as the country’s ruler. His reign was marked by reform in pursuit of a liberalized state and he poured much of the country’s wealth into developing its schools, infrastructure and economy. He promoted the popularity of sports among the country’s youth, both men and women. The media was also allowed a large measure of freedom of expression, an unusual feature in an Islamic nation, although it could not criticise the sheikh or his family directly. But to celebrate Sheikh Zayed’s rule, Abu Dhabi explodes into a celebrational whirlwind that lasts for about a week. Many public and private institutions undertake preparations more than a month beforehand to showcase the Sheikh in all manner of vibrancy and colour. Multi-hued trails of fireworks light up Abu Dhabi’s skyline each night in joyful commemoration. Traditional concerts and dances featuring the best talent celebrate the historical figure and his reign. The locals take to the streets in traditional attire, and the vehicles bear the national flag. TV channels feature numerous specials about the day, the figure and the country that was irrevocably changed for the better because of him. Every August 6, Abu Dhabi lets fly its national colours on Accession Day, a fine tribute to the country’s greatest leader.

The Indonesian capital forms a lively part of the country’s landscape and for a few nights each year, the Jakarta Fair captures the city’s vibrant culture in one central location. For a true experience of warm island hospitality, check into one of the city’s fine Jakarta serviced apartments. If visitors want an unforgettable experience of short stay accommodation Jakarta offers a few select options, such as the Ascott Jakarta, whose stylish interiors and modern amenities make it an ideal choice for business and leisure visits. Formed to commemorate the anniversary of Jakarta, the Jakarta Fair is the brainchild of Governor Ali Sadikin in 1967, who wanted to combine several of the city’s night markets into one. It is modeled after the Pasar Gambir events held during the country’s colonized Dutch era and has incorporated those yesteryear entertainment and trade exhibitions into its structure. Since the fair’s inception, it has become a part of the city’s anniversary celebrations each year. It is an exciting month-long celebration of everything local, unique and ultimately Indonesian, as expressed through music, dance, exhibitions, trade promotions, shows, amusement rides, and of course, delicious food. The fairs sees aspects of Indonesian culture fly in from all parts of the country, each show-casing their own brand of eclectic Indonesia. The longest fair was in 1968, and the celebrations went on for 71 days. One of the most memorable was the fair in 1969, which saw US president Richard Nixon as its VIP guest. To accommodate its popularity and subsequent growth in size, the fair was moved to the Jakarta International Expo in 1992, where it has delighted visitors from across the land and around the world, as they all come together to celebrate Indonesia’s finest cultural offerings.
